The AI-Augmented Code Review Workflow
Code review is one of the most time-consuming parts of software development — and one of the most impactful when done well. AI-augmented review does not replace human reviewers. It amplifies them by handling the mechanical checks so humans can focus on what they do best: evaluating architecture decisions, business logic correctness, and organizational context.
The workflow is simple: AI reviews the PR first and flags issues. The human reviewer then focuses on the items AI found plus the areas AI cannot evaluate. The result: faster, more thorough reviews.

Examples: AI False Positives
AI reviews also produce false positives. Learning to recognize them is part of using AI reviews effectively.
Common False Positives
- Suggesting unnecessary null checks: AI flags a variable as "possibly null" when your data model guarantees it is always set. The AI does not know your database constraints.
- Performance micro-optimizations: AI suggests converting a .filter().map() to a single .reduce() when the array has 10 items. The readability loss is not worth the negligible performance gain.
- Suggesting "better" approaches: AI recommends a different library or pattern that is technically superior but would create inconsistency with the rest of your codebase.
- Flagging intentional behavior: AI questions code that looks wrong but is correct for a specific business reason (e.g., allowing negative balances for credit accounts).

The Optimal Review Workflow
- Step 1: PR is opened. CI runs linter, type checker, and tests automatically.
- Step 2: AI review runs and posts comments on the PR with flagged issues.
- Step 3: Author addresses AI feedback (fixes real issues, dismisses false positives).
- Step 4: Human reviewer reviews — now with AI's context, they can focus on architecture, business logic, and design decisions.
- Step 5: Final approval and merge.
